Metroland Media Group owner of the Toronto Golf and Travel Show, community newspapers seeking bankruptcy protection.

Metroland Media is seeking protection under the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act as they are restructuring its operations while laying off roughly 605 employees in an announcement made by the company.

The layoffs are almost two-thirds of the workforce while 71 of their newspapers are moving to a digital model according to the announcement. No information was provided regarding their various consumer and trade shows. Pro Shop magazine reached out to the show manager Lars Melander and he said “ I am hopeful the show will go on as Golf Town is now our presenting sponsor.”

The decision is due to the unsustainable financial losses of changing preferences of advertisers and consumers as stated by Metroland.

Jordan Bitove of Nordstar says they will continue to publish only six daily newspapers in both print and digital formats.  Bitove is also the owner of Score Golf Magazine along with Golf Town.
