The Canadian golf industry was saddened to learn the passing of PGA of Canada Member Ian Webb this past weekend at the age of 54.
For those who may not know, Ian started at Credit Valley in 2000 as the Director of Golf and in 2008 he was promoted to the role of General Manager/Chief Operating Officer. His love for Credit Valley and its people runs deep, as many consider him to be a patriarch of the club. The Canadian (and worldwide) golf community rallied in support of Ian, who is regarded as one of the best people in the business. In a way that in typically Webby fashion, he set a new standard for all of us to follow him. #webbystrong became one of the most popular hashtags within the Canadian golf community His friends and colleagues went out of their way to express their love for him and their appreciation for what he accomplished over what has to be considered the career of all careers in the Canadian golf industry.
Ian Webb was the kind of person that you remembered exactly where you were when you first met him.
Ian understood from a young age that for his profession, the most important thing is to never forget that you’re in the service business. You’re not there to show off your own game, set a new course record, or prove how much you know about the swing or the rules.
Ian believed that the few hours you spent at your club should be a break from the hectic craziness of your professional and personal life.
Ian better than anyone, understood the kinds of little things he could do to make your afternoon at the course a great one, to keep you coming back time and time again, more engaged in the social, strategic and athletic parts of the game.
To honor Ian, the PGA of Canada Foundation renamed their scholarship program to the Ian Webb Scholarship. In an effort to promote and foster ongoing education for PGA of Canada Members and Candidates for Membership, the Webby Fund— in support of the PGA of Canada Foundation— will offer scholarship funding of varying amounts to qualified and selected applicants who are engaged in continuing their education through full-time studies. These scholarships are also open to any Sons/Daughters, Grandchildren or Spouses of PGA of Canada Members to help further academic achievements.
Ian will be missed but never forgotten. If interested, donations to the Trillium Health Partners would be appreciated by the family.
