A new golf course is getting ready to open in Fort McMurray this summer.
Rotary Links Golf, located near the Fort McMurray International Airport and next to Phoenix Heli-Flight, is scheduled to open on July 1.
Brent Mackay, general manager of Rotary Links Golf, said one of the goals of the golf course is to be available for everyone.
“What we’re really looking for is to provide an avenue for all of the resident of Fort McMurray that offers an affordable, available, recreational, and social golf course,” he said.
Nine holes will be available to play when the course first opens. Nine more will be added in the coming years.
The golf course will have water obstacles throughout, as well as five different sets of tees on each hole so players can play to their strengths and skill level. This will provide a total of 5,372 to 7,330 yards of play.
The course has partnered with the Rotary Club of Fort McMurray, a non-profit organization. Mackay said any monetary surplus the golf course makes, after regular costs to the course including maintenance and construction, will be donated to local organizations and charity groups.
Having this strong community base is important for Mackay.
“We want to reinvest into the community and local organizations… building a community golf course that everyone can benefit from, not just golfers,” he said.
Playing the course will cost $30 to $40 for a day. Mackay said in order to ensure daily play will be available as much as possible, a limited number of outside tournaments will be held and memberships will be available.
