The Golf Journalists Association of Canada (GJAC) have awarded this year’s Journalism Scholarships to Matt Johnson and Nashra Syed, both students at Toronto Metropolitan University.
Johnson, a native of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, took journalism online during the pandemic while working in the news department at the Saskatoon StarPhoenix.
“I’m super thankful to be chosen as a winner,” said Johnson. “For as long as I can remember, sports have been my passion. I want my career to be in sports and this bursary will go a long way in helping make that dream come true.”
Syed, from Mississauga, Ontario, is also in the journalism program at Toronto Metropolitan University.
“Winning this scholarship means that the future of sports journalism is expanding beyond what we currently know, and I think that’s exciting,” said Syed, who is also being awarded $2000, from Dan and Laura Keogh.
Established in 2006, part of GJAC’s mandate is to promote golf journalism in Canada and recognize excellence in Canadian golf journalism. The focus of this scholarship is to encourage excellence in sports writing by student journalists across the country.
