The Canadian Golf Superintendents Association (CGSA) and Rain Bird are pleased to announce Mr. Dean Piller, AGS, Superintendent from the Cordova Bay Golf Course in Victoria, British Columbia, as the CGSA/Rain Bird Environmental Achievement of the Year Award winner for 2018.
The CGSA/Rain Bird Environmental Achievement Award recognizes a member of the CGSA who has held the position of golf course superintendent for a minimum of five years and who has distinguished themselves through dedication to the profession, performance as a golf course superintendent and contributions to their profession and their community by choosing a specific environmental project, policy, program or practice that has been initiated on their course and documented the environmental impact that this initiative has had at their facility.
Dean was selected for this award because of his unique approach to environmental sustainability and achievement. The Cordova Bay Golf Course team, through their garden to table experience, have created opportunities to educate all people, far beyond the limits of the golf industry, that well managed properties are more than just places where golf is played and that Canadian golf course superintendents are creative and innovative environmental stewards that strive to achieve the highest levels of sustainability.
Dean has been a CGSA member since 1985 and holds the Association’s Accredited Golf Superintendent (AGS) designation. He has been the Superintendent at Cordova Bay Golf Course since 1990 and served as the CGSA President in 1999.
Dean is a double award winner this year also being selected as the 2018 Gordon Witteveen winner. He has been the winner of several other CGSA awards over the years including the CGSA Superintendent of the Year Award in 2010, the CGSA Environmental Achievement Award in 2009; and he has been the recipient of the Gordon Witteveen Award from CGSA six times.
