Canada retaliatory tariffs against U.S. will come into force September 16. May impact a variety of products including golf clubs.

Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland said the government plans to impose $3.6 billion Canadian (US$2.69 billion) tariffs on U.S. imports in response to President Donald Trump saying the U.S. is reinstating a 10% import tax on Canadian aluminum.

Trump announced he was reimposing a 10% import tax on Canadian raw aluminum because Canada had broken a promise not to flood the U.S. market with the product. Freeland said that was simply not true and that imposing trade penalties in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic is “unnecessary, unwarranted and entirely unacceptable.”

The products that could be hit with a 10 per cent levy in Canada include washing machines bicycles, golf clubs, hockey sticks, playground equipment, aluminum foil and more

The tariffs will increase costs but people will probably not even notice the increase and unlikely to upset the market. Let’s hope the relationship between the two countries does not get worse as the golf industry does not need any more disruptions – Covid – 19 is bad enough!
