The clubhouse and pro-shop were destroyed

A Saskatchewan community is banding together after the Loon Lake Golf Club clubhouse and pro-shop burned down over the weekend.

Golf course superintendent Mik Carey said they closed up the clubhouse Saturday night at about 10:30 p.m.

At 2 a.m., he was awakened by the firefighters who told him the clubhouse was on fire.

“It was just complete shock,” said Carey. “You come out of a deep sleep like that and you’re kind of scared a little bit and then you get up there and you see flames shooting out of the roof like that and you just don’t know what to think.”

According to Carey, they aren’t sure what caused the blaze.

The golf course was closed on Sunday but Carey said it should be back up and running soon.

“We’ll be able to maintain the course still at a very high level,” Carey said. “As for the clubhouse side, we’re trying to get something temporary on the go here so that we can get back up and running as soon as possible.”

For the time being, the Meadow Lake Golf Club has stepped up to help by allowing the Loon Lake members to golf there for no extra charge.

“That just shows how strong our industry is and it’s just amazing that they could do that for our members and us at this time,” Carey said.

Emotional loss for many

Since the club posted about the fire on Facebook on Saturday morning, people from all over the province have been sharing sympathies. So far, there have been nearly 600 comments and over 1,000 shares on the social media site.

“So sorry! We loved it, spent many days a week there!,” wrote Donna Meier.

“That is so sad… I learnt to golf at this course years ago… hope you all bounce back better than ever!!!” posted Matt Theisen.

Carey said many of the people who have reached out to them are shocked.

“It’s sad, you know, everyone comes out there and they think about the memories they’ve made there.”
