St. George’s Golf and Country Club welcomes Ian McQueen as new Golf Course and Property Manager, effective January 30, 2017. McQueen has held the same position at nearby Islington Golf Club since 2012, and brings to St. George’s over 17 years of golf course management experience in both public and private club settings.

“The membership is very excited to be acquiring Ian McQueen as our new Superintendent. Coming from a neighbouring Stanley Thompson property that has faced similar challenges in recent years, such as the flash flooding of 2013, and complete greens rebuild in 2014, his proven successes make us confident that he is the right fit for the club, ” says Board Chair,  David Imrie. “He understands the implications of the weather we experience in our micro-climate and is focused on providing our members with exceptional playing conditions.”

St. George’s was designed by Stanley Thompson in 1929 and following the ice storm of 2014 the classically designed course underwent an extensive restoration of its greens that saw the conversion of original push-up Poa annua greens to USGA bentgrass greens led by consulting golf course architects, Tom Doak and Ian Andrew.

Chief Operating Officer, Jason Clarke, is looking forward to Ian joining the team and supervising the final maturation phase of the three-year project. “Ian brings with him a proven track record of exceptional course conditioning, an understanding of strategic planning and project management, having grown over 80 new bentgrass greens, and a member-centric focus to his operational practices and procedures. As we look to the future of golf at St. George’s, I’m confident Ian will help us to improve our already celebrated course and preserve Stanley Thompson’s legacy.” St. George’s GCC is currently ranked #41 in the world by Golf Digest and was the only Canadian club to be listed by Platinum Clubs of the World in 2015, rated number 67 of the top 100.

“Since I started in the golf industry it has been a dream of mine to work at Canada’s top private club. I am honoured and excited for the opportunity to be part of such a historic club”, said McQueen about making the move to St. George’s.

Ian started his career with Caves Valley Golf Club in Maryland and further developed his craft holding the Golf Course Superintendent position at The Club at Bond Head and Assistant Superintendent at Magna Golf Club. As Superintendent at St. George’s Golf and Country Club, he will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of managing over  165 acres of land and maintaining the Club’s International Audubon Certification.
