YOUR CUSTOMER WANTS VARIETY

19th hole 2

Since the last issue of Pro Shop magazine, Triple Bogey has exploded in Ontario, sold out once in Alberta (which we won’t let happen again), and shipped to PEI and Manitoba for another great summer ahead.

We wanted to thank you all for believing in, and getting behind, a family run, small business with a dream. We are so excited about how Triple Bogey is selling that we decided we are going to add a few more flavours to the mix in 2019: a light lager, an amber lager, and we may even have something special for the ladies.

We believe variety and support are very important, and so should you, while running a golf course. We touched on it a bit in the last issue: stay away from those so-called “exclusive” deals and if you do make one, be sure you know what you are really getting in return.

For the most part, these “marketing” programs aren’t as good as they seem. We know the bottom line is important, especially these days with the rising minimum wage and all the competition, but just make sure you are picking the right partners, ones that are actually supporting you, giving you everything they promise (samplings, prizing etc.), and don’t have an inflated base price to begin with pulling the wool over your eyes.

These one-company deals can also be scary because your customer wants variety. Dealing with one company alone can limit what you have in the fridge, as well as the fact that you are relying on that company for all your marketing and support.

With the old adage, ‘variety is the spice of life’ in mind, why not offer a few beers on that beer cart that people can’t get at every local pub? I’m not saying you need to add a bunch of 120 IBU IPAs into the mix.  I say make sure there’s enough of a variety of thirst quenchers for those hot summer days, and a few less traditional brews, for those craft beer enthusiasts.

We also believe that having too much variety can be a real pain in the ass too. We hear it all the time that a club brings in a specific kind of beer because two members requested it, or that there’s one guy at the club who will only drink a certain beer. Always remember that you are catering to a lot more than just three guys and that fridge can fill up fast.

You can’t please them all, but you can find great products in each category that people will learn to drink, even if it’s not the beer that they drink every night in their underwear on their own couch.

There are lots of crowd pleasing products out there; just make sure you have the basics covered and people will drink them.  One light lager, a couple of regular lagers, one red larger, a dark (Guiness), an IPA and a Radler, and/or a cider, and even a canned wine would round out my menu. 😉
