Rob Strahan, 61, will retire from Westmount Golf & Country Club at year’s end, closing the book on a stretch of his life that started in 1981 when former head professional Gus Maue hired him as an assistant. Strahan assumed the top job in 1990 and has been a fixture ever since, rarely taking a day off during the golf season while running the day-to-day operations of the magnificent Stanley Thompson-designed course and interacting with members.
The latter is something Strahan expects he’ll miss most about Westmount, the people he has come to know and care about during his time at the club, some of them who have been there since his first day as Maue’s sidekick.
“I’ll miss the people, hands down, and I mean all the people, my team that I work with every day and all the members,” said Strahan.
“People have said to me that I’ll be glad to get away from what they feel are tedious questions or problems that they have, but I like being a problem-solver and trying to help out. You can’t always be successful, but the majority of times you’re able to help them out, and that, to me, is a big win.”
