Family Comes First with Cottonwood Pro
Gregg Schubert, head golf professional at Cottonwood Golf and Country Club in Calgary, is a TaylorMade man through and through.
So much so, that when he and his wife Nicole came to naming their now nearly four year old daughter, the Schuberts opted for Taylor.
Okay, they didn’t actually name their daughter after the dad’s equipment of choice for the past 10 years, but you get the idea.
“I get kidded about it all the time, says Schubert, who’s been a “poster boy” for the product for years.
“They [TaylorMade] keep pushing the technology envelope,” he says. “Besides, I love the adidas clothes line, the TaylorMade clubs, and everything else.”
Schubert is a veteran of the professional ranks, despite his rather youthful age of 37.
He’s been a pro since the age of 19, and has leapfrogged from assistant pro at Cottonwood in 1995-96, to other Calgary-area clubs like Redwood Meadows and Bear’s Paw, before settling back in at Cottonwood - 15 minutes southeast of the city.
The Edmonton native loves the buzz of the Calgary market, and the club’s membership (420 shareholders and 800 members and spouses) is “active and vibrant.”
“It’s just a super experience dealing with them every day,” he says.
Schubert emphasizes “customer service” with his professional staff, whether it’s in the pro shop, on the practice range, or anywhere else on site.
Schubert is the Alberta representative on the Canadian Professional Golfers’ Association Board of Directors. He’s also involved in the Alberta zone.
He thinks meeting pros from across the country gives him a chance to feed off their expertise and bring it back to his own club.
He also credits his superb staff with allowing him to take some time out to participate in national programs.
“A lot of pros get cocooned in the summer months and don’t get to meet their fellow pros,” he says.
Schubert is proud of his club’s support for charitable efforts, including a tournament to raise money for cancer.
The club has also hosted the RCGA Senior Ladies Championship and the Bank of Montreal National Ladies Tour, and local and provincial tournaments such as the PGA of Alberta Assistants Championship.
The team at the “Wood” – led by Schubert – puts its special stamp on each event.
In 2008, it hosted the ATB Financial Classic, a Canadian Tour stop. Recently renovated, the club is for Schubert and his family, a “home away from home.”
“It’s a thrill to be here,” he says. “It’s a great family golf club.”
Designed by Bill Newis, Cottonwood opened in 1990 and is owned by Lyle Edwards, a mentor for Schubert. General Manager Tiffany Gordon works hand in hand with Schubert, and the charitable spirit that envelops the club, is part of its DNA.
It’s a par 71 layout that reaches nearly 7000 yards from the championship tees, and rests picturesquely in the Bow Valley.
Although kids’ programs are struggling in some parts of the country, Schubert spent last winter reviving a junior program at Cottonwood.
The course has even accommodated the youngsters by building ‘Littlewood,’ a 4-hole course that averages between 50 and 60 yards each. It’s open for players 5 to 9 years old.
One of the participants is 8-year-old Nolan Schubert. Another soon to make her debut is Taylor.
Like father like daughter – we know what brand of clubs she’ll be using.
