Climbing the Mountain of Success
The gorgeous mountains of Whistler, B.C. draw people from all over the world – witness the thousands that flocked there to take in the 2010 Winter Olympics. It’s also a golf destination, and a great place for Gregg Lown to show that he’s also a peak performer.
Lown, a native of Windsor, Ontario, who played the Roseland Golf Club as a kid, and worked for nine years at nearby Tecumseh Golf Club, grew stale in the business, decided to run his own bistro and bar, and when that didn’t work, decided to head west to Whistler. “It was time to try something new,” he said.
Lown always loved the mountains since working a summer in Banff, Alberta. While in Whistler, he applied for a job as golf shop supervisor at the Chateau Whistler Golf Club, a Robert Trent Jones Jr. beauty, and home to the David Ledbetter Golf Academy. Lown got the job, and a year later was named head professional. A year after that, he was director of golf. This quick climb to the top of the golfing mountain could have left some pros breathless. Not Lown.
It was simply the culmination of a step-by-step process that began in the flatlands around Windsor. He took his first assistant’s job at Tecumseh 13 years ago, and was head coach at the University of Windsor for six years. A graduate of both the University of Western Ontario (Arts) and Windsor (Bachelor of Commerce), he understands that serving clients (golfers) is the key to success at Chateau Whistler.
Lown appreciates how lucky he’s been in his career, and the benefits of being surrounded by beauty each and every day. “The key for me is flexibility. Being able to engage your clients, and give them personal service. You want them back here on their next business trip.”
The course certainly sells itself. The first four holes climb a total of 400 feet, and the golfing and views are spectacular. “When people come here and go on the golf course they bring an energy with them,” he says. That energy is infectious, and certainly adds to the fun of his job.
Lown has been “a TaylorMade guy” for seven years now, and started using the clubs while an assistant at Tecumseh. He says he really loves the 300 series irons because of their great feel. The TaylorMade adidas line is front and centre at the Chateau Whistler pro shop.
